The Spanish mainland, indeed the whole of the Iberian peninsula and
islands are fantastic locations to go birding.
Coto Donana, Tarifa, Extremadura, Mallorca and the Ebro Delta
immediately spring to mind, but the Costa Blanca area can be very good
for a wide variety of species.
Visiting birdwatchers have been surprised at how many species can be seen in a short
period of time. On a good day over 100 can be achieved and over 150 in a week,
more in the peak migration times.
Whether you are an experienced birder, a beginner or somewhere in between,
local knowledge is a must to find all the species of the area.
Guided trips are available to the best habitats in the area.
With many cheap flights into Alicante and Murcia, cheap car hire,
plentiful accommodation and quiet roads compared to most of Europe,
the area is very convenient to see many of the Spanish and Southern European specialities.
All of the local guided trips are designed to give at least 3 to 4 hours
of birdwatching depending on traffic conditions.
They are taken at a fairly leisurely pace and are not a ‘twitch’.
All participants should see good numbers of birds.
For details of these trips click on the 'Local Birding Trips' button above.
'Where To Watch' type Guide Books are available for the Costa Blanca and The Pyrenees
with details of where to find the interesting species of the area.
Details of these books are shown below.
These books can be purchased by clicking on the 'Guide Books' menu entry above.

I am going on a private trip in November 2023 to Central Thailand taking in
a very productive park in the northern suburbs of Bangkok, then travelling
to Petchaburi province to visit the coastal area of the western Gulf of Thailand
looking for the very rare waders that are present there during the winter months
including Spoon Billed Sandpiper, Nordmann's Greenshank, Great Knot and Asian Dowitcher
all of which may well be seen, then on to one of the best National Parks in Thailand,
Kaeng Krachan and finishing off back in Bangkok. This trip can be repeated during
the months of February and/or March 2024 for up to 4 birders to accompany me.
There are no fixed dates yet or number of days. I would leave that up to the
people that want to accompany me, but anything between 14 and 21 nights would be best.
Common birds that should easily be seen include
White Breasted Kingfisher, Indochinese Roller and Coppersmith Barbet.
